Big-Screen Action You Can Watch From the Sofa
Eight action films with the kind of set pieces that make a living room feel like a theater.

Great action isn’t about how much blows up. It’s about whether you can follow what is happening, care who it is happening to, and feel it in your chest.
These eight films get all three right. Turn the sound up.
Eight action films worth the volume

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Essentially one long chase across a desert wasteland, staged with real vehicles and real stunts. Tom Hardy’s Max is the title character, but Charlize Theron’s Furiosa is the heart of the film. Two hours that barely pause for breath.
Watch it if: you want pure momentum.

John Wick (2014)
A retired hitman is pulled back in after a gang takes the last thing his late wife gave him. The plot fits on a napkin. The appeal is the clean, clearly shot fight choreography and Keanu Reeves doing much of it himself.
Watch it if: you want stylish, no-nonsense action.

Die Hard (1988)
A New York cop visiting his wife’s office Christmas party ends up as the only person free inside a Los Angeles tower seized by thieves. It set the template for every one-man-in-the-wrong-place film since, and Alan Rickman’s villain is still the benchmark.
Watch it if: you want the classic that all the others copy.

Gladiator (2000)
A Roman general is betrayed, loses everything and fights his way back through the arena to face the emperor who ruined him. Big, emotional and built around a commanding Russell Crowe performance.
Watch it if: you want swords, spectacle and a proper story.

Logan (2017)
An aging, worn-down Wolverine looks after an ailing Professor X near the Mexican border, until a young girl with familiar abilities needs his help. It plays more like a Western than a superhero film, and it earns its hard edge.
Watch it if: you’re tired of the superhero formula.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
A blacksmith teams up with the eccentric Captain Jack Sparrow to rescue a governor’s daughter from a cursed pirate crew. Swordfights, sea battles and a lead performance nobody saw coming. The lightest pick on this list.
Watch it if: you want adventure with a grin.

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015)
A street-smart London teenager is recruited into a secret spy agency run out of a tailor’s shop. A cheeky, very violent spin on classic spy films, with fight scenes staged like dance numbers.
Watch it if: you like your spy films loud and tongue-in-cheek.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
A thief, an assassin, a warrior, a talking raccoon and a walking tree end up as the galaxy’s unlikely last line of defense. The retro soundtrack does half the work and the jokes do the rest.
Watch it if: you want action that doubles as comedy.

Getting the most from action at home
Action films lose more than any other genre on a badly set up TV. Two quick fixes make the biggest difference:
- Turn off motion smoothing. It makes fast scenes look artificial. Our living room setup guide explains where to find the setting.
- Give the sound some room. Switch off any night mode or volume leveling, which flattens explosions and music to the same level as speech.
For a double feature, Die Hard followed by John Wick is hard to beat. If you’d like the story to continue, several great action films appear in our list of sequels that are worth your evening.
Questions and answers
Which of these are fine for younger viewers?
Pirates of the Caribbean and Guardians of the Galaxy are the most family-friendly picks. Logan, John Wick and Kingsman are firmly for adults. Check the age rating in your country.
Which is the shortest film on this list?
John Wick, at about an hour and forty minutes. For more short options, see our list of great films under two hours.
Do I need a sound system to enjoy action films at home?
No, but sound matters. Even a basic soundbar is a clear step up from built-in TV speakers, and good headphones work well if you are watching alone.
