Feel-Good Films for When You've Had a Bad Day

Some days do not need a masterpiece. They need ninety minutes of something kind, funny and well made, after which the world seems slightly more manageable.

That is a harder thing to make than it looks. Too sweet and it is unbearable; too clever and it stops being a comfort. These eight get the balance right.

Eight guaranteed mood-lifters

Why comfort films work

A good feel-good film is not one where nothing goes wrong. In every film on this list, somebody loses a job, a home, a contest or a little dignity. What they share is that people are decent to each other, problems turn out to be solvable, and the ending is earned.

It also helps to rewatch. A film you already love asks nothing of you, and knowing what is coming is a large part of the comfort. Keep two or three favorites ready for the days that need them.

More easy evenings: our family movie night list is full of films that cheer up adults too, and great films under two hours will get you to bed early.

Questions and answers

What is a good film to watch when you are sad?

Paddington and School of Rock are the quickest cures. Both are funny from the first few minutes and ask nothing of you.

Are these films suitable for children?

Paddington and School of Rock are family films. Little Miss Sunshine, Chef and The Grand Budapest Hotel have adult language and are better for teens and adults. Check the age rating in your country.

Do feel-good films have to be comedies?

No. CODA and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty are dramas at heart. What matters is how you feel when the credits roll.
